The ICSC worked on an exciting US Department of State (USDOS) project targeting emissions of mercury in Southeast Asia. The project focused on knowledge sharing and capacity building in India and Indonesia, to accelerate the reduction of emissions from the coal combustion sector.
The project identified the major challenges for emissions reduction in these regions, and we designed reports, training materials and workshops to empower stakeholders to accelerate the uptake of appropriate emission reduction strategies.

For Indonesia, we evaluated mercury emissions from the coal sector on a unit-by-unit basis. This allowed us to rank Indonesian coal-fired power plants and identify those that would benefit the most from targeted mercury emission reduction strategies. We then worked with government ministries in Indonesia to use this information to inform Indonesia’s strategy for compliance with the Minamata Convention. More information can be found here.
Our Outreach Programme
The ICSC ran an extensive outreach programme, to deliver the key messages from our studies on all aspects of coal production, transport and utilisation; to inform the debate on the cleaner use of coal; and to encourage the implementation of improved technologies – particularly in developing economies.
The ICSC collaborated with and supported a range of organisations such as UN Economic Commission for Europe, UN Environment, USAID, the Asian Development Bank, the IEA and other Technology Collaboration Programmes, APEC and VGB.
