Global Methane Initiative (GMI)

The Global Methane Initiative (GMI) is an international public-private partnership focused on reducing barriers to the recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source.

Expert cooperation on coal mine methane

The International Centre for Sustainable Coal has a long-standing cooperation arrangement with the Global Methane Initiative (GMI). The GMI is a partnership of public and private stakeholders comprising 45 partner companies and more than 700 project network members. The flagship event, the Global Methane Forum, meets annually at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland. The GMI works closely with the UNECE Sustainable Energy Committee, focusing on the same sustainable energy goals and the ultimate reduction of methane emissions to the atmosphere.

The ICSC has been a member of the GMI for over a decade, regularly contributing papers, presentations and at panel events. Dr Lesley Sloss is a member of the UNECE Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane (CMM), which undertakes and promotes activities aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal mines. The UNECE CMM and the GMI work closely to promote project work and cooperation to advance coal mine methane projects.

The GMI provides a wealth of information and resources for those wishing to understand the challenge of reducing methane emissions from the global energy sector. This includes:

  • a database of methane mitigation and utilisation technologies;
  • a list of international coal mine methane projects;
  • examples of feasibility studies for methane reduction projects;
  • best practice guidance documents; and
  • regional market studies.
