Coal as a resource – gasification and chemicals

About this webinar

China’s fuel and chemicals strategy has focused on maximising use of its indigenous coal to protect its economy from wide variations in the price of imported oil and gas. Coal to tar chemicals is well established but coal gasification and liquefaction are new industries now of global scale. Coal gasification in China is the largest consumer of coal after power, steel and cement. Syngas can be used to make key products generally obtained from petrochemicals and more, including hydrogen and ammonia. The future of the coal gasification industry in China is under pressure due to its poor utilisation of coal carbon and consequent high emissions that are incompatible with national targets. Future options to reduce carbon intensity may come from renewable energy and carbon capture. More environmental issues are emerging that are in common with Petrochemicals.
