Coal has been a major feature of the BRI, with countries using Chinese financing, equipment, and construction to build new coal plants. However, some regions have been more successful than others in completing BRI projects, and this is because the BRI is a flexible, bottom up initiative that heavily depends on local cooperation. Case studies will be used to examine the opportunities and challenges that the BRI presents for countries that want to expand their use of coal.
