Steve is very knowledgeable on a range of clean coal-related topics such as advanced power generation, life cycle analysis, technology roadmapping, and issues associated with the growing use of renewable energies. He has also produced a number of studies examining the potential for clean coal technologies in specific countries or regions.

Between 1997 and 2003, Steve was an independent consultant, and reported on technical, strategic, economic and market issues associated with a range of energy and environmental topics, mainly associated with clean coal use and advanced power generation.

Before this Steve worked for the Coal Research Establishment (CRE) for more than 20 years. Projects included the development of novel chemicals from coal-derived feedstocks, the production and commercialisation of advanced polymeric materials for the mining and power generation sectors, improvements to coal cleaning processes, and advanced power generation technologies.

Steve has an ONC and HNC in Chemistry, a Licentiateship in Polymer Chemistry, and a degree in Polymer Science. In 1997, he was awarded a PhD by the University of Leicester. He started his career working for ICI in the UK.
