ABSTRACT
As an additional CO2 mitigation strategy to carbon capture and storage (CCS), CO2 capture and utilisation (CCU) is attracting increasing interest. The potential applications of CCU are diverse, and currently, there are many new CO2 utilisation technologies at various stages of development and commercialisation. These technologies have the potential to provide opportunities for emission savings for power and other industrial sectors by partially substituting fossil fuel raw materials, increasing efficiency and using renewable energy, and generating revenues through producing marketable products. This report reviews the latest developments in CO2 utilisation technologies. The possible uses of CO2 are described. The CO2 utilisation technologies are grouped according to the technological routes used such as electrochemical, photocatalytic and photosynthetic, catalytic, biological (using microbes and enzymes) process, copolymerisation and mineralisation. The recent developments and the current status of the CO2 utilisation technologies are discussed. The potential environmental impacts of CCU are also analysed.
