Refusal from coal is unacceptable for Kazakhstan – Ministry of Energy

The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan does not plan to abandon coal as a fuel for electricity generation, Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Jandos Nurmaganbetov announced at the Central Asia Clean Energy Forum in Almaty on September 13.

The share of coal in the balance of electricity generation is 69%, according to the ministry.

“We must not forget that Kazakhstan is a country with a cold climate, that our region is not gasified, and refusal from coal is unacceptable for Kazakhstan. The role of coal in the electric power industry is significant, we will not exclude it from the balance anywhere. In addition to the new coal-fired facilities we want to build, we want to modernize those plants and stations that we have,” the Vice Minister said.
