Call for abstracts!
The International Centre for Sustainable Carbon (ICSC) together with Eskom, are delighted to announce our workshop on the Energy Transition, to take place on 19-21 April 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.
The workshop will consider the policies and realities of the energy transition in a range of countries and the issues that arise – how to deal with a grid coping with a large proportion of variable renewable energy, how to repower and repurpose coal assets, how to effect a just transition. It will also consider the role for coal in the circular economy and following on from this, explore the potential future for coal. This meeting will examine these key issues through expert presentations, panel discussions and detailed debate, followed by a guided tour of Cape Town on Friday 21 April.
We invite abstracts on the following topics for inclusion in the programme:
- The policies – that influence the use of fossil fuels in various countries
- The realities – including items such as load shedding in South Africa, and the renewed emphasis in Europe on energy security;
- Coping with renewables – a more technical session on introducing flexibility to coal-fired units and managing the grid;
- Coal in the circular economy – including the use of ash and gypsum and CO2 utilisation;
- Repowering and repurposing – reviewing project worldwide and sharing case studies
- Just energy transition – what is happening in Europe, South Africa and other regions
- The future for coal – with a focus on the cleaner use of coal for power generation
Abstracts of 200 words maximum should be submitted via the website by Monday 6 March.
The International Centre for Sustainable Carbon (ICSC) is part of an International Energy Agency (IEA) organised network of functionally and legally autonomous collaborative partnerships, focused on a wide range of energy technologies, known as Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs). We provide independent policy relevant reports and analysis on how coal, biomass and other carbon sources can become cleaner sources of energy, that can contribute towards a low emissions energy transition compatible with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
